>> good morning, i'm pam cook. time now 6:30. >> big story this morning at least 1,000 people have been hurt in central russia. a ten-ton meteor going 33,000 miles an hour fell to earth. see the pictures? that meteor caused a sonic boom set off car alarms and left giant trail of smoke in the sky. fragments fell in six cities in the mountain region about 1,000 miles east of moscow. as you can imagine there was confusion, panic, people had no idea what was happening. windows were broken and the roof of a factory there also collapsed. now local hospitals just been overwhelmed. the last report says 950 people have been treated for injuries. most suffered facial cuts. many of them like that lady there has been completely bandaged up. they saw elderly people crying in the streets. they taught the world --
6:34 am
thought the world was ending. the meteor is not part of a large asteroid that will zoom past news just hours. lorraine blanco is at chabot space and science center. >> reporter: this asteroid is a totally different thing than the meteor that hurt all those people in russia. this asteroid this morning that you are going to see is much farther than earth and much bigger. and there is a very big difference. let me show you the telescope you will be able to see this amazing asteroid later on this evening. scientists will be tracking and mapping the asteroid with this very large expensive equipment. experts are calling the asteroid 2012da14. it's the biggest rock to come to us in recorded history. and if you are worried about armageddon don't. it's not going to hit earth. it will be a long time before
6:35 am
anything like this could hit us. he's going to kind of explain to us the difference between the little meteor that hit russia and the very large asteroid that will coming close to earth but not that close. >> the main difference is going to be size. the one that went over the skies of russia is very, very small. only a few feet across it at the most. and 2014 it will still be in outer space even though it's a much, much larger rock. and so it's not going to enter the atmosphere and become a meteor. >> reporter: so this one is not going to hurt us. if someone is not a science geek, why should they care about this? >> well, the asteroid represents one of thousands and thousands of rocks that are
6:36 am
orbiting between the earth and mars. they are left over debris from the formation of the planets in the solar system. this one got knocked out of the orbit that would have kept it out there between earth and mars and now orbiting the sun in such a way the orbit crosses the earth's orbit. it's most important thing for us is that it does cross the orbit of the earth and might at some distant point in the future pose a threat to the earth. although today it doesn't. it just raises our interest and our awareness about these objects. >> conrad, thank you very much. if you want to learn more about this asteroid chabot will be opening the observation deck here. it will be open from 7:00 to 10:00. reporting live lorraine blanco. passengers who are on that disabled carnival cruise ship are waking up in hoe tale rooms. the ship docked in mobile,
